Graduate Program General Information
Overview
The M.Ed. Program is a 36-hour program specifically designed for licensed or license eligible teachers.* The program consists of a 15-hour Professional Education core and a 21-hour Content Specialization. Courses are offered at convenient times for teachers, and some courses are offered in alternative formats such as video-conferencing and Blackboard. The Professional Education Core is required for all graduate students.
Additionally, graduate students may choose to enroll in graduate coursework for re-certification, to provide greater specialization within one’s field, or to assist in professional advancement.
*Or with the consent of the Director of Graduate Studies. However, enrolling in graduate courses without an Education degree will not lead to initial or advanced certification.
Admission
Candidates may take up to nine (9) credit hours while meeting the requirements necessary for unconditional acceptance.
For unconditional acceptance, applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.5 GPA from a regionally accredited institution.
- Be licensed or license eligible to teach. A copy of professional licensure must be attached to the application.
- Provide official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores*.
- Provide official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate classes (with the exception of Concord University).
- Provide 2 letters recommending admission into the program. One letter must be submitted by an individual who has supervised, evaluated, or observed the candidate in the classroom setting.
- Submit the completed Disposition Assessment.
- Complete the Application for Admission (Word document), and submit it with a $25.00 fee.
*GRE or MAT scores should reflect the 50th percentile or above. Sub-scores will be reviewed by the Graduate Council.
Conditional Acceptance:
A candidate may apply to the advanced program and take nine (9) credit-hours of courses before all requirements must be met. However, application and fee, transcripts, and a copy of the professional licensure are necessary for conditional acceptance. Failure to complete all admission requirements after nine (9) hours of coursework may result in administrative withdrawal from the courses or credit may not be applied toward graduation in the degree program. Once all admission requirements are met, the student will receive a letter of unconditional acceptance to the Master of Education program and can then continue coursework.
Tuition & Fees
Beginning Fall 2009
In-State: $297 per credit hour
Out-of-State: $522 per credit hour
Clinical Educator's Fee: $268 per credit hour for teachers employed in Bland, Giles, Tazewell Counties in Virginia and Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming Counties in West Virginia.
